After successful performances
of two Robert Simpson String
Quartets in recent years, the 7th
and 11th, we invited the Tippett Quartet back to perform another one.
This time it is his penultimate quartet, the 14th, written shortly before a
severe stroke stopped him composing for the last six years of his life.
Before it we have a Haydn quartet from his Op 20 set, with which he first achieved full mastery in the medium, and we end with Mendelssohn’s tragic last quartet, written in grief for the loss of his beloved sister Fanny and, as it turned out, shortly before his own death at only 38.
